Performing and teaching are two sides of the same coin, in that both are the sharing of something of great beauty and personal importance with others.  It is a great joy to watch a student grow, to see a light flash in their eyes, to see their excitement as they learn a new idea, develop a new technical strategy, or are inspired by a new sound, concept, or understanding.

Teaching is not just a sharing of pianistic skills and musical ideas, but a nourishing of the personal growth of each individual.  With each new technical ability, with each new sound or concept, comes a new sense of empowerment, and a new level of excitement and personal involvement in the creative art of making music. As students grow in their music making, they grow in maturity and confidence as individuals. They sometimes surprise themselves by their ability to move an audience, help listeners in turn to hear and love the special magic that music creates, both in the great established canon of repertoire for our instrument and in new music being written right now. Building a young performers ability as a pianist and musician builds curiosity, confidence, and abilities that enhance all aspects of their lives.

“This is what Dr.L is like to most of us: the most fun, loving, and caring teacher one could ever ask for.”

“I still remember my senior year piano repertoire class like it was yesterday – it truly set me up for success in undergraduate and graduate school!”

“Thank you so much for being one of those trusted adults in my life who cared and recognized me as someone who had something to say. You sure made an impact on my life–and I have become a teacher too!”

“I truly learned a lot and became a much better player than I ever thought imaginable.”

“He truly ignited my passion for musicality and opened new doors for me to dig deeper into feeling and artistic expression. A particularly memorable moment was working on the Scriabin C# minor etude with him. He encouraged me to evoke the depression of a deep winter as I played the music. Every note matters!”

“Meeting you in high school was a turning point in my life, inspiring me to pursue a career in music. Your mentorship and belief in me have guided me to achieve a higher level of artistry. Your guidance and support have meant the world to me.”

“His dedication to teaching has left an indelible mark on generations. With every lesson taught, he has sown seeds of knowledge that will bloom for years.”

“You are one of the most important figures in my musical journey. Whether through discussion of technique or more broader, overarching goals, you always seemed to know what to say to help me find my own path. It was such a privilege and an honor to study with you and I am so grateful for the time that I got to spend in your studio.”

“Dr. Lymenstull took me to a brand new music world. I learned so much playing and teaching skills from him. He was always kind and helpful. He encouraged and supported me a lot. He was like my family. Thank you so much for teaching and taking care of me when I was in Interlochen.”

Having retired from daily teaching at Interlochen Arts Academy, I continue to be active both as a performer and teacher, and am available for:

  • Individual lessons, in person and online (Zoom, VooV, or Facetime)
  • Concerto and solo performances
  • Guest masterclasses
  • Guest artist for Music Teachers conventions
  • Sabbatical replacement
  • Artist performer and teacher at music festivals
  • Competition adjudicator

Many of my students are preparing for competitions or for auditions for college or for Interlochen. Others simply have regular lessons to progress and grow as a young pianist. Others are students whom I have heard in masterclasses who would like further help or coaching. All are welcome, either for a single meeting or for ongoing study.

Performances and residencies are also available with the Interlochen Trio,

with violinist Tina Qu and cellist Patrick Owen of the Interlochen Arts Academy faculty.
